Amazon has acquired 82 organizations. Their most recent acquisition was TeachStreet on January 31, 2012

Amazon is an e-commerce site that offers a range of services and products. It was started in 1996 and has three segments i.e. Amazon Web Services, International and North America. The products include content and merchandise that Amazon buys from vendors or third-party sellers. Amazon also manufactures its own electronic devices like tablets, phones, etc. The company has a subsidiary called Whole Foods Market, Inc. that is known for selling organic and healthy food and staples.

Amazon also provides some other services like advertising, credit cards, digital content subscriptions, publishing, fulfillment and database offerings. The main focus of Amazon is on convenience and price. Kindle is another subsidiary of Amazon, which handles the publishing or digital content side.

Amazon was founded in 1996 by Jeff Bezos. The launch of Amazon dates before that, but initially it was known as Cadabra. The company has a total of 541,900 employees and has an annual revenue of $136 billion.

The biggest acquisition made by Amazon was Whole Foods Market. The company bought it for $13.7 Billion. It was a bold move on Amazon’s behalf. As Amazon wanted to reach every corner of every house, buying a grocery market turned out to be one of the smarted decisions. Other than this, Amazon also made some picky decisions and acquired Kiva Systems, Twitch and Zappos for $775 million, $970 million and $1.2 billion respectively. All three of these companies helped Amazon find a new direction.

One of the most influential Amazon acquisitions was of Elemental Technologies. It helped the company strengthen its cloud infrastructure services. Amazon Prime was built around LoveFilm, which was initially known as the “Netflix of Europe”. The largest number of acquisitions made by Amazon was in the year 1999. The first company that amazon acquired was PlanetAll and the most recent company that it bought is Goo Technologies.
