Twitter is a social-media platform known for public conversations and self-expression. It is a network that lets the users share their ideas, opinions, views, news and other kind of information. It is based in San Francisco and has major offices in San Antonio, Boston and New York City.

The platform was a result of a brainstorming session by a podcasting company called Odeo. Jack Dorsey then initiated the idea of texting to a group of people. This resulted in the creation of Twitter by Evan Williams, Jeremy LaTrasse, Noah E. Glass, Christopher Isaac Stone and Jack Dorsey himself. Twitter’s first code name was ‘twttr’. Its first version was introduced in 2006 and by the year 2007, almost 400,000 tweets were already posted. Since then, Twitter has 330 million active users and among them are some really famous public figures.

The major services provided by Twitter include live conversations, live connections and live commentary. Twitter has created an application for every mobile platform, which provides social networking and microblogging services. The website runs mainly through the internet, however, it can also be operated using just a mobile phone without internet connection.

Moreover, Twitter is used as a major marketing tool by businesses. Twitter has around 358000 employees. 30.73% of its shares are owned by other institutions, 21.51% by mutual fund holders and 15.37 by Individual stakeholders.

Twitter’s exceptional popularity and revenues led it to acquire some companies to make itself stronger. The first of many Twitter acquisitions was Summize, which is a search engine for finding most viewed and liked services. It was acquired in 2006. After that Twitter acquired a total of 50 companies.
